Find the Cause

Low iron always has a reason, like heavy periods, blood loss or poor absorption. Your doctor looks into it, not just the number.

Monitored Throughout

We watch you during and after each infusion, and recheck your levels a few weeks later.

Who Might Need an Iron Infusion

Iron pills work for many people. IV iron is often used when:
• Iron pills haven’t raised your levels, or caused stomach side effects you couldn’t tolerate
• Your body doesn’t absorb iron well, such as with celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease or after weight-loss surgery
• Ongoing blood loss, such as heavy periods, keeps your iron low
• Your iron needs to come up faster, for example before surgery
• You have chronic kidney disease

Your doctor reviews your blood work and history to decide whether IV iron makes sense for you.

Signs of Iron Deficiency

• Tiredness or weakness
• Shortness of breath with activity
• Pale skin
• Headaches or dizziness
• Cold hands and feet
• Restless legs
• Brittle nails, or craving ice

These symptoms have many causes, so blood tests (a blood count, ferritin and iron studies) are how we know whether iron is the problem.

Low vitamin B12 can cause similar symptoms. Learn about B12 shots.

What to Expect

1. Blood work to confirm iron deficiency, if you don’t have recent results.
2. A visit with your doctor to review results, look for the cause, and plan treatment.
3. The infusion: a small IV in your arm, the iron given slowly, then a short period of monitoring. Plan on about an hour.
4. Follow-up blood work a few weeks later to make sure your iron has come up.

Before Your Infusion

• Eat and drink normally, and take your usual medications unless we tell you otherwise.
• Ask us whether to keep taking iron pills.
• Tell us if you’ve ever had a reaction to IV iron, if you’re pregnant, or if you have an infection.

Common side effects are mild, such as headache, nausea, a metallic taste, flushing, or muscle and joint aches. Serious allergic reactions are rare, and we monitor you throughout.
