Signs of Low B12
B12 deficiency can develop slowly. Common signs include:
• Tiredness or weakness
• Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
• Memory problems or trouble concentrating
• A sore tongue
• Anemia found on a blood test
These symptoms have many possible causes, so a blood test is the way to know whether B12 is the problem.
Low iron can cause similar tiredness. Learn about IV iron infusions.
How B12 Shots Work
1. Check your level with a quick blood draw, if you don’t have recent results.
2. Talk with your doctor about the results and what may be causing a low level.
3. Get your injection, a quick shot into a muscle, usually in the upper arm.
4. Follow a schedule your doctor sets based on your level, with rechecks over time.
Shots or Pills?
Many people can raise their B12 with high-dose supplements by mouth. Injections are often used when the body has trouble absorbing B12, or when levels are very low. Your doctor helps you decide which makes sense for you.

B12 Shot Questions
Do I have to be a patient to get a B12 shot?
No. Anyone 18 or older can book a B12 injection with us, whether or not you’re an existing patient.
How much is a B12 shot?
B12 shots are $100 without insurance. Using insurance? Call us and we’ll check your coverage.
Can I get a B12 shot for energy if my levels are normal?
B12 shots are meant for people with a B12 deficiency. If your levels are normal, extra B12 isn’t likely to boost your energy, and your doctor can look into other causes of fatigue. Not sure? Call our front office.
Do I need a blood test first?
Usually, yes. A blood test confirms the deficiency, and we can draw it right here in the office. If you’ve had recent B12 results, bring them.
How often will I need B12 shots?
It depends on how low your level is and why. Your doctor sets a schedule and rechecks your level over time.
Who is more likely to have low B12?
Older adults, people who eat a vegan or vegetarian diet, people who take metformin or long-term acid-reflux medicines, and people who’ve had weight-loss surgery or have conditions that affect absorption, such as pernicious anemia, celiac disease or Crohn’s disease.
