The Whole Picture

Sleep apnea affects your blood pressure, blood sugar and weight. We treat them together.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea happens when your airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, so your breathing stops and starts many times a night. Your brain wakes you briefly each time, often without you knowing, which leaves you tired the next day. It’s common, especially with extra weight, a large neck, high blood pressure, older age or a family history, and it’s often missed.

What Sleep Apnea Care Includes

• A review of your symptoms, sleep habits and medications
• A sleep apnea screening questionnaire and exam
• Home sleep apnea testing
• Referral for an overnight sleep lab study when needed
• Going over your results and treatment options with you
• CPAP prescription and follow-up
• Medical weight loss, including Zepbound when appropriate
• Referral to a sleep specialist or dentist when needed
• Checking and treating related conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes

Home Sleep Testing

If your symptoms and exam suggest sleep apnea, we order a home sleep test. You wear a small device for one night in your own bed, then return it. The results show how often your breathing pauses and how low your oxygen drops. If home testing isn’t right for you, or the results don’t match your symptoms, we refer you for an overnight study in a sleep lab.

Treatment Options

The most common treatment is CPAP, a quiet machine that keeps your airway open with gentle air pressure through a mask while you sleep. Other options include an oral appliance made by a dentist, sleeping position changes, and weight loss. Zepbound is FDA-approved for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity. We prescribe CPAP, coordinate your machine and supplies through a medical equipment supplier, and follow up to make sure it’s working and comfortable. When an oral appliance or specialist care is the better fit, we refer you to a dentist or sleep specialist.

Too Sleepy to Drive Safely?

If you’re nodding off while driving or at work, don’t wait for your next routine visit. Avoid driving when drowsy and book a same-day visit. Call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, or signs of a stroke.

Insurance and What to Bring

Visits and sleep tests are billed to your insurance, and we accept Medicare. Some plans require prior authorization for sleep testing. Your usual copay, deductible or coinsurance applies. See insurance & billing.

Please bring: your insurance card and a list of your medications and supplements. If you have a bed partner, ask them what they notice at night, or bring them along.

Sleep Apnea Questions

What are the signs of sleep apnea?

Loud snoring, pauses in breathing or gasping during sleep (often noticed by a partner), waking up tired even after a full night, morning headaches, dry mouth, trouble concentrating and dozing off during the day. Many people don’t know they have it.

How does a home sleep test work?

You pick up a small device and wear it for one night in your own bed. Simple sensors on your finger, chest and nose track your breathing and oxygen level. You return the device, and we go over the results with you.

Do I need an overnight sleep lab study?

Most people can be tested at home. We refer you for an overnight study in a sleep lab if you have certain heart or lung conditions, if another sleep disorder is suspected, or if your home test is normal but your symptoms strongly suggest sleep apnea.

Is snoring always sleep apnea?

No. Many people snore without sleep apnea. Snoring with breathing pauses, gasping or daytime sleepiness is more concerning and worth testing.

Can weight loss help sleep apnea?

Yes. Losing weight can reduce sleep apnea and sometimes resolve it. Zepbound is FDA-approved for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity. See our medical weight loss page.

Why is it important to treat sleep apnea?

Untreated sleep apnea is linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, atrial fibrillation, type 2 diabetes and car accidents from drowsy driving. Treatment usually improves sleep, energy and focus within weeks.
