The Whole Picture

Quitting lowers your risk of heart disease and stroke. We also check your blood pressure and cholesterol and order lung cancer screening if you qualify.

It’s Never Too Late to Quit

Quitting smoking at any age lowers your risk of heart attack, stroke, lung disease and many cancers. Within a year of quitting, your risk of heart disease drops sharply, and it keeps falling. Nicotine is addictive, so cravings and withdrawal are real. That’s why medicine and support make such a difference.

• Varenicline (Chantix) or bupropion when appropriate
• Nicotine replacement: patch, gum, lozenges and more

• Checks of your blood pressure, cholesterol and lung health

Quit Smoking Medicines

Varenicline (Chantix) reduces cravings and makes smoking less satisfying. You usually start it a week before your quit date. Bupropion is a pill that eases cravings and withdrawal. Nicotine replacement, such as the patch with gum or lozenges for cravings, gives you nicotine without the smoke. We help you choose based on your health history, and we can combine treatments for heavy smokers.

Your Quit Plan

We set a quit date, start your medicine, and plan for the situations that make you want to smoke, like coffee, driving, stress or drinking. Follow-up visits help you stay on track and adjust the plan if cravings are hard to handle. Free extra support is also available any time from the national quitline at 1-800-QUIT-NOW. If you slip, it doesn’t mean you’ve failed. We’ll get you back on track.

When to Call Right Away

Call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing or signs of a stroke. If you notice changes in mood or behavior, or have thoughts of harming yourself while taking a quit-smoking medicine, stop it and call us, or call or text 988 any time for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. For a new cough, fever or shortness of breath that isn’t an emergency, book a same-day sick visit.

Insurance and What to Bring

Quit smoking visits are billed to your insurance, and we accept Medicare. Most plans cover quit-smoking counseling and FDA-approved medicines. Your usual copay, deductible or coinsurance may apply. See insurance & billing.

Please bring: your insurance card, a list of your medications and supplements, and anything you’ve tried before to quit and how it went.

Quit Smoking Questions

What is the most effective way to quit smoking?

Using a quit-smoking medicine together with support from your doctor or a counselor works best. It can double or even triple your chances of quitting compared with trying on willpower alone.

Is Chantix still available?

The Chantix brand was taken off the U.S. market in 2021, but the same medicine is available as generic varenicline. It works the same way, and we prescribe it.

Can I combine nicotine replacement with other medicines?

Yes. Using a nicotine patch together with gum or lozenges for cravings works better than one product alone. Nicotine replacement can also be combined with bupropion or varenicline when appropriate.

Does insurance cover quit-smoking treatment?

Most plans cover FDA-approved quit-smoking medicines and counseling. Medicare Part B covers quit-smoking counseling visits, and Part D plans cover prescription medicines. Coverage details depend on your plan.

Will I gain weight if I quit?

Some people gain a few pounds, but the health benefits of quitting far outweigh it. We can help you manage your weight while you quit, including medical weight loss if you need it.

Should I be screened for lung cancer?

If you are 50 to 80, have smoked about 20 pack-years (for example, a pack a day for 20 years), and still smoke or quit within the past 15 years, a yearly low-dose CT scan is recommended. We’ll check whether you qualify and order the scan for you.
