What Is the Annual Wellness Visit?
The Medicare Annual Wellness Visit is a yearly prevention appointment. Instead of a head-to-toe exam, it focuses on building and updating a personalized prevention plan: what screenings and vaccines you’re due for, which health risks to work on, and how to stay independent and safe at home.
What’s Included
• A health risk questionnaire and review of your medical and family history
• A review of all your current medications and supplements
• Height, weight, BMI and blood pressure
• A check of memory and thinking
• Screening for depression
• A review of daily function and home safety, including fall risk
• A written screening schedule for the next 5–10 years
• A list of your other doctors and care providers
• Advance care planning, if you’d like to discuss it
The Welcome to Medicare Visit
In your first 12 months with Medicare Part B, you can have a one-time Welcome to Medicare preventive visit. It reviews your health history, checks your blood pressure, weight and vision, makes sure you’re up to date on screenings and vaccines, and gives you a written plan. After that, you can have an Annual Wellness Visit every 12 months.
Wellness Visit vs. a Physical
Original Medicare doesn’t cover a routine yearly physical, but it does cover the Annual Wellness Visit. If you want a new or ongoing problem treated at the same appointment, that part is billed as a regular office visit, and your usual Medicare cost-sharing can apply. We’ll tell you if that happens. Under 65 or have other insurance? See our annual physical page.
New Symptoms? Don’t Wait for Your Wellness Visit
Wellness visits are for prevention. For new symptoms, book a same-day sick visit. For chest pain, trouble breathing, signs of a stroke or any medical emergency, call 911.
Cost and What to Bring
We accept Medicare assignment, so with Original Medicare the Annual Wellness Visit and the Welcome to Medicare visit are $0: no copay and no deductible. Most Medicare Advantage plans cover an annual wellness visit too; call us and we’ll help you check. See insurance & billing.
Please bring: your Medicare card, a list or bag of all your medications and supplements, names of your other doctors, any recent test results, and your glasses or hearing aids if you use them.
Medicare Wellness Visit Questions
Is the Medicare Annual Wellness Visit free?
Yes, with Original Medicare. We accept Medicare assignment, so the Annual Wellness Visit has no copay or deductible. If your doctor also treats a new or ongoing problem during the same visit, that part may be billed separately and your usual cost-sharing can apply.
How often can I get an Annual Wellness Visit?
Once every 12 months. You become eligible after you’ve had Medicare Part B for more than 12 months and haven’t had a Welcome to Medicare visit or Annual Wellness Visit in the past 12 months.
Is the Annual Wellness Visit the same as a physical?
No. The Annual Wellness Visit focuses on prevention planning: your health risks, medications, memory, mood, safety and screening schedule. It isn’t a head-to-toe physical exam. Original Medicare doesn’t cover a routine yearly physical.
When can I get the Welcome to Medicare visit?
Within the first 12 months after your Medicare Part B coverage starts. It’s a one-time visit.
Do you accept Medicare Advantage plans?
Most Medicare Advantage plans also cover an annual wellness visit. Coverage and networks vary by plan, so call us at (973) 309-6192 and we’ll help you check.
Can I come to you if I’m new to the practice?
Yes. New Medicare patients are welcome, and the wellness visit is a good way to start care with us.
