Who Should Get a Flu Shot
The CDC recommends a flu vaccine every year for nearly everyone 6 months and older, and we see adults 18+. It’s especially important if you:
• are 65 or older
• have a chronic condition such as heart disease, lung disease, asthma or diabetes
• are pregnant
• live with or care for someone at higher risk
If you’re 65 or older, ask us which flu vaccine is recommended for your age group.
When to Get It
September and October are ideal, so you’re protected before flu season peaks. If you miss that window, it’s still worth getting a flu shot later in the season. Protection builds over about two weeks after the shot.
What to Expect
• A quick check of your health history and any past vaccine reactions
• The shot itself, usually in the upper arm
• Common, short-lived side effects: a sore or red arm, mild aches or a low fever for a day or two
Tell us before your shot if you’ve had a severe allergic reaction to a flu vaccine in the past, or Guillain-Barré syndrome within six weeks of a previous flu shot. An egg allergy alone doesn’t stop you from getting a flu shot.
Cost and Insurance
• With insurance: we bill your plan, and many plans cover the flu shot as preventive care.
• Medicare: Part B covers one flu shot each flu season.
• Without insurance: $90.

Flu Shot Questions
Do I need an appointment for a flu shot?
Yes. Flu shots are by appointment, and same-day appointments are usually available Monday through Saturday, 8 AM–7 PM. Book online or call (973) 309-6192.
How much is a flu shot?
We bill your insurance, and many plans cover the flu shot as preventive care. Without insurance, it’s $90.
Does Medicare cover flu shots?
Yes. Medicare Part B covers one flu shot each flu season. We accept Medicare.
Can the flu shot give me the flu?
No. Flu shots can’t cause the flu. Some people have a sore arm, mild aches or a low fever for a day or two, which is the immune system responding.
Can I get a flu shot if I’m sick?
With a mild illness, such as a cold, you can usually still get your flu shot. If you’re moderately or severely ill, wait until you feel better.
Do I have to be a patient to get a flu shot?
No. Anyone 18 or older can book a flu shot with us, whether or not you’re an existing patient.
