Signs of Ear Wax Buildup
Ear wax normally clears on its own, but it can build up and block the ear canal. Common signs include:
• Muffled or reduced hearing
• A plugged or full feeling in the ear
• Earache or itching
• Ringing in the ear
• Dizziness
Hearing aids, earbuds and frequent cotton-swab use can make buildup more likely.
How We Remove Ear Wax
1. A quick look in your ear with a lighted scope to confirm wax is the problem and check your eardrum.
2. Removal by one of two methods:
• Irrigation: warm water gently flushes the wax out.
• Manual removal: small instruments lift the wax out, without water.
3. A recheck to make sure the canal is clear, with tips to help prevent buildup.
When Irrigation Isn’t Used
We don’t use irrigation if you have a hole in your eardrum, ear tubes, past ear surgery or an active ear infection. In those cases, manual removal is usually the safer choice. Tell us about any of these when you book.
Skip the Cotton Swabs
Cotton swabs tend to push wax deeper and can scratch the ear canal or injure the eardrum. Ear candling isn’t safe or effective. If your ears feel blocked, over-the-counter softening drops for a few days can help, unless you have ear tubes or a hole in your eardrum. If the blockage doesn’t clear, come see us.
Sudden Hearing Loss? Get Seen Quickly
Sudden hearing loss, especially in one ear and without an obvious cause, needs prompt medical evaluation. Book a same-day visit or go to an emergency room. Severe ear pain with fever or drainage also needs a doctor’s exam. For any medical emergency, call 911.

Ear Wax Removal Questions
Do I have to be a patient to get ear wax removal?
No. Anyone 18 or older can book ear wax removal with us, whether or not you’re an existing patient.
How much does ear wax removal cost?
Ear wax removal is $150 without insurance. Using insurance? Call us at (973) 309-6192 and we’ll check your coverage.
Will I get irrigation or manual removal?
Your doctor decides after looking in your ear. Irrigation gently flushes wax out with warm water. Manual removal uses small instruments and is used when irrigation isn’t a good fit, such as with a hole in the eardrum, ear tubes, past ear surgery or an ear infection.
Does ear wax removal hurt?
Usually not. You may feel pressure, warm water in your ear, or brief dizziness. Tell your doctor right away if anything hurts.
Should I use cotton swabs or ear candles at home?
No. Cotton swabs tend to push wax deeper and can injure the ear canal, and ear candling isn’t safe or effective.
Can I use ear drops before my visit?
Over-the-counter wax-softening drops for a few days beforehand can make removal easier. Skip them if you have a hole in your eardrum or ear tubes, and call us first if you’re not sure.
